Understanding Gum Disease and Prevention

Gum disease refers to the swelling, soreness, or infection of the tissues that support your teeth. There are two main types, gingivitis and periodontal disease. Maintaining healthy gums is essential to keeping your teeth for life.

When plaque and calculus deposits build up, they can damage the periodontal tissues, the bone, ligament, and gum, that support your teeth. This can lead to tooth mobility and, in severe cases, tooth loss. Regular visits to our dental hygienists for professional cleaning and debridement of plaque and calculus, combined with good oral hygiene at home, can help prevent gum disease and tooth loss.

The process begins when plaque builds up on healthy teeth, irritating the gums and potentially causing both the gum and bone to recede. This can make teeth loose and unstable over time.

Bad Breath? We Can Help

Bad breath is a very common concern, and while it can be embarrassing, it’s often easily treatable. The most frequent cause is bacteria that release odorous gases as they build up on your teeth and gums.

Other factors that contribute to bad breath include strong foods like garlic and onions, smoking, and certain medical conditions, such as nasal or stomach issues.

Our hygienists at Manor House Dental Practice can help identify the underlying cause and provide professional cleaning, whitening and tailored advice to freshen your breath and restore confidence.

Ways To Access Our Hygienist Services

There are two convenient ways to access our hygienist services:

  • New Patient Dental Examination & Registration
Registering as a new patient allows for a full dental and periodontal health assessment. During this 45–60 minute appointment, we’ll evaluate your gum health, perform oral cancer screening, and provide a smile analysis with advice on possible improvements such as cosmetic or orthodontic treatments. Matthew, our dentist, will take radiographs and photographs to support accurate diagnosis and discuss your treatment options in detail. You’ll receive a written estimate for any recommended care and may be invited for a follow-up if more complex treatment planning is needed.

  • New ‘Direct-Access’ Patient Consultation
Direct Access, is ideal for those who already have their own dentist or wish to see a hygienist independently. During this 15-minute consultation, our hygienist will assess your periodontal (gum) health and screen for gum disease, tailoring the treatment to your specific needs, whether that’s Option 1, 2, or 3. While this appointment does not include radiographs, we still recommend regular dental check-ups to ensure your overall oral health is properly monitored.

Tailored Hygiene Treatment Options

Whether you suffer from bad breath, bleeding gums, or gum disease, or simply want a brighter, fresher smile, our hygienist services are designed to suit your needs.

  • Option 1 – Classic Clean
Our Classic Clean removes visible calculus and stains from your teeth. After a periodontal health assessment, our hygienist removes plaque and tartar from hard-to-reach areas to help maintain fresh breath and optimal oral health. Your teeth are then polished for a cleaner, brighter appearance, and you’ll receive expert advice on oral hygiene routines and cleaning aids to use at home.

  • Option 2 – Extended Hygiene Treatment
This treatment is ideal for patients with early periodontal issues or areas that need more focused attention. It includes everything from the Classic Clean but allows more time for a thorough and personalised clean, especially in difficult-to-reach or problem areas, supporting your journey toward optimal gum health.

  • Option 3 – Extensive Hygiene Therapy
Our Extensive Hygiene Therapy is designed for patients with advanced periodontal problems requiring bespoke, in-depth treatment. These appointments focus on carefully removing deep plaque deposits and restoring gum health through a series of targeted, extended cleaning sessions.

Recently relocated to the area and from the first call with Vanessa and after seeing Matthew and Nicky, they all made me feel welcomed, safe and treated with impeccable care. I highly recommend this practice. Affordable, caring and efficient. Well done team. First class service.
